Kim Canceled: Kardashian Free Met Gala and What That Means

There has been a lot of discussion surrounding a Page Six article published earlier this month. Sources told Page Six, Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour will NOT be including the infamous Kardashion clan on this year's Met Gala guest list. What does this mean, and why are we all talking about it?

Here is the deal, Anna Wintour is undoubtedly the most influential person in the fashion world. Excluding them from the most notable fashion event of the year, will result in a culture shift many people are longing for, myself included. You may be wondering why now, or what finally changed? Well, here are my thoughts.

Let’s start with the Swarovski crystal elephant in the room, the Marilyn Monroe dress. The whole idea behind the Met Gala is to conserve the history of fashion and costume design. The Gala is actually a charity/fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Therefore, the glaring irony of Kim K wearing Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday Mr. President” and subsequently destroying it is blinding.

And can we quickly talk about how weird it was she spent all that time dying her hair from very dark brown to “platinum blonde”, just to slick it back in a bun! What was the point of doing all that damage to your actual hair just to style like that? I’m no Kardashian fan, but if she wore a replica dress and a wig her look could have actually been quite beautiful. Instead she just ruined a dress that has been perfectly persevered since 1962. Rant over. Anyway…

In the wake of the Pandemic, and the effects inflation has had on our wallets, the fashion industry has birthed a new trend, Recession-Core. Perhaps you’re familiar with it? But for those hearing about it for the first time take a look at what is going down the runways at fashion week, and what the celebrities are wearing on the red carpet these days. Very minimal, and understated looks, mostly neutral colors and most notably a lack of excessive jewelry. No more statement necklaces and designer logos in your face. That said, this aesthetic and mindset pretty much goes against everything the Kardashians are known for. So perhaps we can start to say goodbye to them constantly being in our news feeds? Well, maybe not just yet, but one thing is for sure people are definitely over the hype around the Kardashian family and I for one am here for it.

Now having said all of that, do I actually think they won’t be at the 2023 Met Gala? Doubtful. If I had to put money on it, I would say Kim K will be there. Just like she has ever since Kayne took her as his date for the first time a decade ago. However, the fact that people are excited and hopeful for a Kardashian free Met Gala is refreshing. Maybe next time, society will think twice about who we decide to make famous in the future.
